Amy Winehouse documentary 'Amy' breaks UK box office record in opening weekend

Amy, the acclaimed film about the late Amy Winehouse, has broken a UK box office record over its opening weekend.
The feature-length documentary from Asif Kapadia, the BAFTA-winning director of Senna, has earned £519,000 in UK cinemas since opening on Friday (July 3), the best ever opening weekend total for a British documentary film and second best opening weekend total for a documentary film ever. Only Michael Moore's 2004 documentary about the War on Terror, Fahrenheit 9/11, earned more in UK cinemas over its opening weekend.

Amy played in a total of 133 cinemas across the UK and Ireland this weekend - and will play in over 200 this coming weekend beginning Friday, July 10. Hamish Moseley of the film's distributors Altitude said of its success: "We are thrilled that audiences have come out en masse during a period of exceptionally fine weather to see Amy."
