Kyrgios and Del Po steal the headlines.
Nick Kyrgios lifted his first title at the Open 13 Provence in Marseille as he defeated US Open winner Marin Cilic comprehensively. The big Aussie sealed victory with an ace, his 18 in total in the match and in doing so finally got his hands on a singles trophy his talent deserved. He defeated two top tenners on the way to the title in Tomas Berdych and Richard Gasquet. Kyrgios has been making other kinds of headlines up until this point with his poor on court behaviour and silly comments in interviews but this title is sure proof that inspite of the awful oncourt attitude there lies incredible talent, he just has to work out how to harness it.
Juan Martin Del Potro also made his long awaiting comeback to the court in Delray Beach Florida. The Giant Argentinian asked for a wildcard and the tournament organizers duly obliged. Del Po beat American Denis Kudla, John Patrick Smith and 5th seed Jeremy Chardy but came undone in the semi finals against Sam Querrey who eventually went on to win the title. His forehand and his serve are the Delpo of old but his back is still a push, a slice backhand to get the ball back into play and rarely can Delpo lean into the court and rip a backhand. Still fantastic to see Juan Martin back on court, he continues his comeback this week in Acapulco.
Its almost March and Rafael Nadal has yet to beat a player ranked inside the top 50.
Rafael Nadal suffered another surprising loss this time to clay court specialist Pablo Cuevas. The defeat yet another in 2016 is a sign that Rafael Nadal is lacking confidence and is still trying to find his game. It seems that Nadal has lost his bottle as during tight moments in the semi finals once again he got tight and started missing his shots. He heads to Indian Wells lacking confidence and looking over his shoulder in the rankings.
On the WTA Tour the Premier Event in Dubai was decimated by injury and shock results. Ana Ivanovic had a great victory over Simona Halep in the 2nd round but was beaten in the next round. Kvitova and Mugurza were beaten before they reached their seeding and Serena and Sharapova didnt even make the starting grid!
