Knee operation throws spanner in Fedworks
Roger Federers knee injury and subsequent knee operation has caused the Swiss to reevaluate his season schedule. Initially he was scheduled to play both Rotterdam and Dubai before taking in the California desert at Indian Wells tournaments he traditionally performs well at. Fed had opted to forgo the whole clay court season with the exception of Roland Garros opting instead for a 2 month sabbatical from mid March to mid May. He now finds himself post op unable to play Indian Wells and instead deciding to make his comeback on the first event of the European Clay court swing in Monte Carlo.
The remainder of Federer’s schedule is likely to be published as the recovery and season progresses. One thing is for sure that the main goals for this season will be Wimbledon, Olympics and US Open. The clay court swing will be used to get Federer on court and back into his rhythm with no sleep to be lost with any losses. Federer will likely play Madrid, give Rome a miss and then perhaps Istanbul or some lower status event in which Roger will be the main man.
Ranking
Currently ranked number 3 in the world Roger is likely to lose points from his lack of match fitness as he recovers from the knee injury. Roger won Dubai last year and who can forget the epic 3 set final at Indian wells against Novak Djokovic too. Roger could be ranked between 5-8 when he returns to court in April which will not trouble him unduly but will affect his seeding at the slams which could result on him being paired with Djokovic, Murray or Wawrinka in the quarter finals.
Form
In the past Roger has shown that even with long periods of time out he can return to his level relatively quickly. Federer was in good form in January making the final only to be defeated by Milos Raonic and the semis of the Aussie Open only to lose against eventual winner Novak Djokovic. Hopefully Federer’ movement will not be hindered by his knee injury nor will his game be disadvantaged by his lack of court time.
Tennis World
As Novak Djokovic recently stated in Dubai tennis needs Roger Federer and his absence is massive for the sport. The sooner Roger gets back the better as his name puts bums on seats and really raises the media profile of any tournament. I have no doubt Federer will be gutted he is missing Indian Wells a tournament I know he has come to love over the years. I can imagine a similar period for tennis once the great man retires. There will be a void left and those who love Federer and struggle to find a new player to follow. Hopefully tennis fans and players alike will come to appreciate even more the greatness of Roger Federer.
