Open Championship Rule Change Take 2
By Michael Cousins
In our last article, we went over the new “enhancements” USBC has decided to make to its Open Championships.
The main thing we covered was the new changes to the eligibility rule, and how former Jr. Team/Team USA members and current collegiate players must now adhere to the same eligibility rules as professionals in that specific tournament.
My main issue with these changes pertains to Jr Team USA members and current collegiate players. While I don’t personally like the change to the adult team members either, at least I can understand why they made that change. Again, I disagree with it. But I at least get it, I guess, though I think there should be a “statute of limitations” type of thing, so to speak (5 years after your last appearance, you regain your eligibility).
But when it comes to Jr. Team USA members and collegiate players being classified as “professionals,” essentially, is absurd.
Let’s start with Jr. Team USA. It is absolutely asinine that bowlers that made Jr. Team USA as kids, competing against other kids, can be viewed as “professionals.” I understand that some — many, in fact — go onto the PBA after they’ve aged out and have finished college, but those bowlers already have eligibility restrictions, as they have their PBA cards. The ones that chose NOT to follow that path should not be punished just to be punished. It is nonsensical.
And I understand that many former Jr. Team USA members have had success at the OC. Especially recently. But that does not change the fact that many of them were and are amateurs. And the USBC shouldn’t be able to decide who is and isn’t an amateur.
Now onto the current collegiate bowlers. This rule is even more idiotic than the aforementioned. And, again, I understand that some collegiate bowlers have had success at the OC in recent years. Especially last year. I get that. But why are they being punished for that? And, more importantly, why are they all being put under the same umbrella?
Understand this: not all collegiate bowlers are created equal. In fact, nowadays, many programs have 40-50, heck, even more, bowlers in their programs at a time. And remember that new kids arrive every year, basically. And college programs only bowl 5 kids at a time. They travel anywhere from 6-8-10 bowlers per tournament. So that leaves dozens and dozens of collegiate bowlers each year that will have never bowled a single event.
Now these kids, kids that may or may not bowl a single big collegiate event their entire career, are being punished? Why?
I mean no disrespect here, but there are plenty of collegiate bowlers in the country that are not good enough to even be bowling in the open division, let alone good enough to follow the same eligibility rules as professionals. And to think otherwise is ignorant.
Personally, I’m against all of these rules. I won’t pretend I’m not. I do understand where the adult Team USA ruling came from, and I understand where certain people may even agree with it. But I don’t. And that won’t change. But I cannot see where ANYONE could possibly agree with the Jr. Team and Collegiate rulings. Who does this help? How does the enhance the OC?

New Bowling Balls to Consider for Tournament Season
With tax season here, balls are being purchased at a very high rate. And tons of great balls have recently come out, and I am asked daily: “which ball should I buy?”
So, today, I want to go over some of the newest balls that I have been most impressed with the would be worth your investment.
Hammer Rip’d and Rip’d solid:
Incredible. Period. I don’t really need to give you an in-depth review here. If you are looking for big, high end balls, look no further; these are the balls you’re looking for. The solid is incredibly strong and very continuous, the Hybrid reads the body of the lane as well as any shiny ball I have seen in quite some time. I have sold a lot of these so far, and I have been impressed by each one.
Storm Son!Q:
Huge fan. Incredible ball. I have liked virtually every IQ ever released, and this one is no different. Very clean, very strong down lane. For me, it’s an IQ30 on steroids. Very, very good ball, and definitely worth the investment if you’re looking for an upper-mid performance ball that exceeds that level of performance.
Brunswick Tenacity
Watching this ball on the lanes for customers I have to say I am impressed. Brunswick found the right combination of backend and midlane to make this ball work from many angles.
Ebonite GB3:
It’s a Gamebreaker. It’s good. Duh. Great price point, excellent value. That’s all there is to say, right? It’s a Gamebreaker.
Motiv Venom Shock Pearl:
It’s very clean, but I still really like it. I was a huge fan of the original Shock, and so far this ball has been impressive. On the burn, I feel very comfortable throwing this ball. I’d definitely recommend it for a great burn/dry lane ball.
Older balls to consider:
Storm Code Red (duh), Columbia 300 Eruption Pro

Finding Your PAP
I’ve done a blog on this before, but apparently it needs to be said: finding your PAP is important.
Equally important? Making sure it’s the right PAP.
To adequately and accurately measure your PAP, your shop operator should take you out to the lanes, let you warm up, then — once you’re loose and throwing it well — he should use a tool called an Armadillo to determine your PAP.
I understand that this is pretty basic/obvious stuff, but, please, stick with me here.
Next, after that, they should mark your PAP. Once it’s marked, they should watch you throw several shots after to make certain that what they’ve marked is accurate.
What they’re looking for is variation, essentially. They’re trying to make sure that shot-to-shot there isn’t much variation — if any. They’re also checking to make sure that the shot you threw in which they got the reading was a good shot or a “true shot,” as I call it. If the shot that was initially measured wasn’t up to your best, the PAP that was found may not necessarily be your PAP.
If these steps aren’t taken, we cannot be certain that these measurements are accurate. And if they aren’t accurate, it can lead to all sorts of problems.
The reason I bring this up now is because I had a customer come to me that had his PAP checked recently, and was told it was X over by X up, and he felt strongly that these measurements were accurate. He insisted we drilled a ball for him based off of this PAP.
Well, to save a lengthy story, his ball never hooked. At all. And, come to find out, the PAP was incorrect. By a lot. And we were forced to plug it, find his actual PAP, fix it, and re-drill it.
Your PAP — an accurate one — is paramount to proper ball motion. It is imperative that your PSO/coach/or whoever, get your PAP, that they check your PAP, and that they get it right.
