The paparazzi and television cameras follow such players and their every move it is no wonder that some of these top stars are paid huge sponsorship deals to wear such big brands. This article will take a look at 10 of the biggest sponsorship deals in the world right now.
Scot Andy Murray seems to have been given very good financial advice following his multi year reputed 15 million deal with German sportswear Giant Adidas expired in December 2014. In January 2015 Murray signed a lucrative deal with Baltimore based American manufacturer Under Armour to wear the kit and don the shoes on court. No figures have been released by either party but if his Adidas deal is anything to go by the Under Armour deal will be of a similar kitty.
Barcelona FC
The classy Catalans have become more and more successful off the pitch which mirror their performances on it. Barcelona signed a 4 year deal worth £48 million with Qatar Airways with win bonuses available for cups won. The deal helps finance some of the superstars on the Barcelona playing roster.
Crystal Palace
Having avoided the dreaded drop in the English Premier League, Crystal Palace is enjoying their third season in the promised land of World Football. Under the guidance of Eagles legend Alan Pardew, The Eagles signed a multi million pounds per season deal with Mansion Group which will see Palace compete with some of the biggest names in the division. Having secured the signing of Yohan Cabaye in the summer, the Eagles are riding high in the top half of the division and are on course to make Europe.
Daniel Carter
Rugby megastar and former All Black Dan Carter is without doubt the most valued player in world rugby. The Racing Metro player has a long term sponsorship deal with Jockey who produce underwear which without doubt makes him the best paid rugby player in the world.
Floyd Mayweather
The self proclaimed boxing superstar and pound for pound the best fighter ever earns enormous amounts for his Las Vegas fight nights. However his success in the ring is not mirrored by his sponsorship deals. The American has several endorsement deals but with the minimum starting price at $1 million USD, there are not many takers.
NBA star and global basketball ambassador Lebron James has a reputed multi million pound deal with the Coca Cola company. Coupled with similar deals with Nike, Samsung and McDonalds the NBA’s biggest shirt seller could lift over $60 million per annum.
Maria Sharapova
The Russian blonde has a successful spells on the tennis court but the majority of Marias earnings have come from her looks and sponsorship deals. Following her French Open victory in June 2014 Sharapova signed a lucrative deal with Avon Cosmetics. The Russian also promotes her own range of Candy and designs her own dresses for matches.
Manchester United FC
The Mancunians may not have been very successful on the pitch of late but their commercial success continues to go from strength to strength. Ed Woodward the new CEO brokered the deal with Adidas for a 10 year £750 million deal for the Red Devils to wear their products on the pitch. The deal is subject to a number of preconditions namely that United qualify for the Champions League, something which can no longer be taken for granted given recent performances.
Pastor Maldonado
The Ecuadorian may not be the best driver in the formula one paddock or the best known name but Lotus driver Maldonado brings in an astonishing £45 million in sponsorship per annum from Ecuadorian energy company PDVSA. Unfortunately the Latin American does not see a penny of it as the sponsorship goes direct to his team.
Tiger Woods
Although the American Golfer has failed to win a major in a few years he is still an incredibly lucrative and sought after sportsman. Tiger’s golfing income has been a fraction of what he earns in sponsorships and appearance money. With a brand portfolio which includes American big hitter Nike, luxury watchmaker Rolex and Upper Deck it is no wonder that it is reported that Tiger earned over $50 in the last season.
