AEGON CHAMPIONSHIPS VOTED ATP 500 TOURNAMENT OF THE YEAR
The Aegon Championships, the grass court tennis tournament played at The Queen’s Club every June, has been voted ATP World Tour 500 Tournament of the Year in the ATP’s annual awards presented by Moët & Chandon.
It is the third successive year that the Aegon Championships has received an ATP Tournament of the Year award, and comes after the event’s first year as an ATP-500 event.
Stephen Farrow, Aegon Championships Tournament Director, said: “To win ATP World Tour 500 tournament of the year in our first year in the category is a huge thrill, a magnificent achievement, and a credit to our tournament team, The Queen’s Club, our sponsors – particularly Aegon, and our broadcast partners. We were up against some of the finest and most popular tournaments on the ATP World Tour, and I am immensely proud that our efforts have been recognised by the players in this way.”
Chris Kermode, ATP Executive Chairman and President, said: “In its first year as an ATP World Tour 500 event, it’s a remarkable effort for the Aegon Championships to win this award. The tournament continues to go from strength to strength and this is a fitting recognition on behalf of the players for all the work that goes into the event. Many congratulations to the Aegon Championships team for this latest accolade.”
Tara McGregor-Woodhams, Head of Brand, Sponsorship and Digital Marketing Aegon UK said: “This is fantastic news. At Aegon, we are proud to be the tournament’s title-sponsor, and to have contributed to an event which is so universally respected and admired. This award recognises the tireless and brilliant work of the LTA’s excellent tournament team, The Queen’s Club, who allow their beautiful club to be transformed every year to be ready to host world-class tennis, and the packed stands of spectators who create such a wonderful atmosphere every year.”
The Tournament of the Year awards, voted annually by ATP players, recognise the leading standards set across the three tournament categories on the Tour. Indian Wells repeats at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 level. In the 250 category, first-time winners Doha and St. Petersburg share honours.
The Aegon Championships has been staged at The Queen’s Club for more than a century, with Rod Laver, John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Boris Becker, Pete Sampras, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray just some of the names on the Roll of Honour. Murray won a record-equalling fourth title in 2015 with victory over Kevin Anderson in the final.
The 2016 edition of the Aegon Championships will take place 13th-19th June.
The Aegon Championships will be broadcast live throughout by the BBC and Eurosport.
As well as Aegon, the Aegon Championships is supported by BNP Paribas, Highland Spring, Nike, Wipro, FedEx, Accolade Wines, Babolat, Europcar, Hackett, La Manga Club, Latam Airlines, Moët & Chandon, Peugeot, Quorn, Rado, Ricoh and Thomson Reuters.
